Here’s A Good Reason To Stop Doing Sit-Ups, Forever

If you’ve ever coveted six pack abs — or anything resembling a flat stomach — you’ve probably done a sit up. But before you do your next roll up, you may want to consider this: You could be hurting your back.

A recent editorial in Navy Times called for putting an end to the sit-up, once and for all. At least, when it comes to the physical-readiness test sailors must pass twice each year. As for the rest of the world, the editorial stated this: the sit-up is an outdated exercise that could cause potential lower back injuries. Need more proof? The Canadian Armed Forces recently cut the sit-up from its fitness test. While the land of Justin Bieber is no place to necessarily copy, they might be on to something.

Other experts agree. Tony Horton, the creator of P90X, also advocates against the sit-up. Horton has said:

“I really believe that the traditional, antiquated crunch has seen better days, and it’s time to make a change.”

It can also put hundreds of pounds of compressive force on the spine.
So, what’s better? The plank pose. Just hold yourself in the top of a push-up pose, and keep your back straight. A modified curl pose is also suitable.
Whatever you choose to do, pay attention to your lower back. If an exercise hurts, change it.
