We all know that, simply put, “sex sells.” But did you know it also apparently sells hamburgers?
There’s even a term for it: Slutburgers. Which is not only demeaning, but also incredibly weird.
The bad news is, burger chain Carl’s Jr. has a history of using famously scandalous spokeswoman (think Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian) to sell burgers. Commercials show these women “suggestively” eating its burgers. Fast food porn, anyone?
The good news is, a survey showed that a lot of Americans find these commercials kinda offensive, as well as “irritating and annoying.” And in a unique (and exciting?) twist on events, Carl’s Jr. newest commercial will feature MMA fighter Ronda Rousey.
Rousey, known for her “badass” attitude and coining the term, “do-nothing b*tch” (or DNB) to refer to “the kind of chick that just tries to be pretty and be taken care of by somebody else,” the move is a smart one by Carl’s Jr. While they aren’t the first chain to use an athlete as a spokesperson, Rousey’s career is on the upswing after winning her latest fight, and announcing her plans to star as herself in a film based on her autobiography.
She’s also a strong — and some might even say controversial — celebrity who won’t take crap from anybody. Rousey has addressed claims that people think her body looks masculine, and frankly, she doesn’t give a you-know-what.
Which is probably the same way I feel the only time I would ever eat at Carl’s Jr., AKA when I’m too drunk to care that I am scarfing down a fast food burger.
With Rousey, we all win.
